About The Project
"The Civil War In St. Augustine" is a repository for manuscript letters, journals, reports and other materials created by Union soldiers, Confederate soldiers, and civilians that wrote about the conflict and key events in St. Augustine, FL. Manuscript transcriptions and subject keywords are searchable. Metadata reflects both digital editions of manuscripts and physical locations of originals in the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library & Archives. Original text images are digitized and viewable beneath item descriptions and relevant data. Document items can also be browsed by tag, links that sort and connect materials by a particular date, place, person, year etc. Tags are also organized in a keyword index, browsable by subject: person, year, regiment, and place.
All texts are transcribed according to their original form, but certain placenames/person names have been modernized or corrected as subject keywords and tags (Picolati to Picolata, Charlestown to Charleston, John Dickinson to John Dickison etc.). Feel free to search historical and modern forms for results.
